  • The three actives each do a different job. Minoxidil is the hair active, and its over-the-counter label covers regrowth on the top of the scalp. Tretinoin is in the blend to help it soak in, and its own approved use is acne. Fluocinolone is a steroid, and its label covers inflamed and itchy skin conditions that respond to steroids. Which of the three end up in your bottle is a clinical call your provider makes from your intake. Use it on the scalp exactly as your provider directs.
What does each ingredient do for hair and scalp?

Topical minoxidil helps regrow hair on the top of the scalp. Tretinoin is included to help absorption. Fluocinolone is a steroid used to ease inflammation and itching in certain skin conditions. The three ingredients are compounded in one bottle.

Sources and study details

* For 26%: Original source. Men’s minoxidil 2% solution Drug Facts, Other information. Mostly White men ages 18 to 49 with moderate hair loss; sample size not supplied in consumer label. At four months, 26% reported moderate to dense regrowth versus 11% with placebo. Topical evidence, not oral minoxidil efficacy. The 26% result tested 2% minoxidil alone, not 5% minoxidil or LIV’s three-ingredient formula. For 66%: Original source. Bazzano et al., JAAD (1986), abstract. The abstract reports terminal hair regrowth in 66% of participants studied after one year of topical tretinoin plus 0.5% minoxidil. The study included 56 subjects overall; the abstract does not give the combination-arm denominator or sex-specific results. Preliminary ingredient-combination findings, not results for LIV’s three-ingredient formulas or their prescribed strengths. Fluocinolone was not part of either study. These studies followed people using topical minoxidil, either on its own or with tretinoin.

Help Center

Find answers to common questions about treatments, results, prescriptions and what to expect. Still have questions?

How does LIV work?

You fill out a short health form online. A licensed provider reviews it and decides if treatment is right for you. If it is, your prescription ships to your door. You answer a few questions before each refill, and you check in every three months. You never have to visit a clinic.

Do I need to see a doctor in person?

No. There is no appointment to book. You answer questions online whenever it suits you. A licensed provider reviews your answers and decides if treatment is right for you. The whole thing takes about five to seven minutes.

How long does it take to get my prescription?

A licensed provider reviews your intake within 48 hours. Once approved and in stock before 1 PM Eastern, the pharmacy ships that day. After approval, delivery usually takes 3 to 5 days. Compounding can add time.

When will my provider review my plan?

Before each refill, tell us how you're doing. Your provider reviews your progress and adjusts your plan as needed. You'll also have a check-in every three months.

Who decides whether this is right for me?

A licensed provider reviews your health form and decides whether treatment is right for you. They choose your dose and how much medicine to prescribe.

What does compounded mean?

Compounded means a licensed pharmacy mixes the medicine for one person. It is not made in large batches. The FDA does not approve compounded medicines for safety, quality or how they are made.

Can I change, skip or cancel my plan?

Yes. You can change your plan, skip a shipment or cancel from your account. If you want to change your treatment or dose, discuss it with your provider.

Why is tretinoin in a hair loss dropper?

It is there to help the blend soak in. Topical tretinoin's own approved use is acne. Its labeling says that safety and effectiveness for long term use in other conditions have yet to be established. Minoxidil is the ingredient used for hair regrowth. Your provider reviews your intake to decide whether to include tretinoin.

Is this the same as drugstore minoxidil?

They are two different products. The drugstore bottle is a finished medicine sold under its own approved label, which covers the top of the scalp and says the product is not meant for a receding hairline. Yours is compounded: a licensed pharmacy mixes it for one patient, with two more actives alongside the minoxidil. Studies of the over-the-counter product do not establish the same results for this compounded blend.
